Thrift stores have experienced higher inflation primarily due to rising operational costs and increased demand for secondhand goods. Many thrift stores, including larger ones like Goodwill, have had to raise prices because of higher wages, increased rent, and general cost increases in areas such as insurance and healthcare for employees. Additionally, thrift stores have been adjusting prices in response to market studies, pricing their items in line with competing for-profit and resale shops. As a result, prices for goods that used to be low have now risen significantly, impacting consumers who rely on thrift stores for affordable items.

There’s also been a cultural shift, with more people shopping at thrift stores for both economic and environmental reasons. During times of high inflation, people look for cheaper alternatives, leading to greater demand and allowing stores to justify price hikes. While this benefits thrift stores financially, it can hurt low-income shoppers who rely on thrift options for essential items, as the prices in many second hand stores now exceed what they used to be even a few years ago.
